The team joined the NFL as part of the merger in 1970 after starting play as a charter member of the American Football League (AFL) in 1960. Empower Field at Mile High in Denver, Colorado is the home field of the Broncos, who are currently owned by the Walton-Penner group. They used Mile High Stadium as their home field from the time of their founding in 1960 until the 2000 campaign.
The Broncos had trouble competing during their first ten years in the AFL and their first seven years in the NFL. They had not had a winning season until 1973. They qualified for the playoffs for the first time in 1977 and went on to win Super Bowl XII that year. The Broncos, who have only lost eleven seasons since 1975, have emerged as one of the NFL’s most successful teams. Together, they hold the NFL record with eight AFC Championships (1977, 1986, 1987, 1989, 1997, 1998, 2013, 2015) and three Super Bowl Championships (1997 (XXXII), 1998 (XXXIII), and 2015 (50). Their five Super Bowl losses were shared with the New England Patriots, making up the majority of their appearances. The Pro Football Hall of Fame includes eight primary Broncos players.
